Weasel loved to watch the sun set from his mountain. Weasel Mountain was next to the
ocean on a narrow stretch of land that jutted out from the mainland and stretched West
over the horizon. Weasel often wished he could travel the land that lay west into the
sunset and see the animals that lived there, but he was small and had important duties
on Weasel Mountain. He was the last of his family that lived on the mountain. His father
had told him before he died to never leave the mountain, that he must protect it. But his
father had not told him what it was he was to protect the mountain from. “You will know.”
he said. Weasel felt trapped on the mountain.

Weasel had many friends that also loved to watch the sunset with him. His good friend's
Bear, Otter and Rabbit frequently joined him. Eagle and Hawk would soar above them to
catch the last beams of sunlight high above Weasel Mountain. Weasel secretly wished
he had wings like Eagle and Hawk. “Life would be so much easier.” He thought. “And I
could fly into the sunset and see new things.”

One day there was something different about the sunset as Weasel, Bear, Otter and
Rabbit watched. A boat appeared on the horizon and slowly moved along the shoreline
drifting with the tide. It came to rest at the bottom of Weasel Mountain and the four of
them agreed to investigate the next morning. Eagle and Hawk had flown over the boat a
few times and reported back, “There are no people on board and it appears to be filled
with strange objects.”

Weasel was restless that night waiting for dawn. He had often wondered what kinds of
people and animals lived to the west where the sun set, the mystery boat may provide
some clues. He had rarely ventured far from Weasel Mountain other than to gather some
of his favorite mushrooms, which he could only find at the bottom of Weasel Mountain in
the swamps and bogs.

While in the swamps and bogs he had to be on the watch for Snake who was not
friendly. Snake would argue with Weasel that the mushrooms belonged only to her,
although Snake did not eat them. Snake would hiss at Weasel as he gathered the
mushrooms, “Ssssssstay away from my mussssshroomsssssss.” Weasel would try to
ignore her but he would have to toss a mushroom or two at Snakes head if she got too
close and tried to bite him. Weasel became quite good at tossing mushrooms from a
distance. Snake soon learned it was best to remain quiet and just flick her tongue at
Weasel. They were not friends.

Snake had also seen the boat come to shore that evening. She had plans to investigate
the boat in the morning too. She knew that Weasel, Bear, Otter and Rabbit would all be
'snooping' around the boat in the morning. She had seen Eagle and Hawk flying above
the boat. “Ssssssssnoopsssss,” she muttered half asleep. “Why don’t they ssssssssstay
on the mountain?”

The next morning Weasel was up bright and early cooking a big batch of mushrooms for
his friends, who began to show for the hike down to the mystery boat. He figured he
could spare a few mushrooms since they would be in the area where he could replenish
his stocks.
